About me

Kyra · Graphic designer

Hi, I'm Kyra, the graphic designer behind Binary Starlight Designs. I create logos, illustrations, posters and characters, all designed and drawn by hand.

I don't use AI in my designs. Every piece is made by me, from the first sketch to the final file, so what you get is original and made for you.

I like to work closely with my clients. We start with your idea, I share sketches and drafts along the way, and we refine them together until the design brings your vision to life.

Proms from St John's

Event flyer for an evening music concert

I was approached about a commission to design the flyer for Proms from St John's, an evening music concert. My client described three or four of the concert's musical instruments layered over each other, depicted in bright, distinct colours.

After clarifying which instruments would be featured, we settled on a trombone, a harp and a viola. I designed and coloured each one individually before bringing them together.

Trombone · Harp · Viola

With the three instruments layered into one composition, I approached the client with the first draft.

She was happy with the composition, but wished to change the colour scheme to warm tones across the board.

First draft: bright, distinct colours · Recoloured in warm tones

With the colours decided, she requested a gradient background, along with some little musical notes floating around.

Having created the portrait design, she also requested a landscape version, with space for text advertising the event.

The finished flyer

The client was thrilled with the final design, and several people at the event commented that the flyer was what drew them to it.

The Castle of Dreamtime

Illustrations for a guided meditation book: the orange room

After seeing one of my previous commissions, a client reached out about illustrating a guided meditation book. She wanted to avoid AI, having seen other artists' attempts with it come out looking uncanny.

To start, she gave me an overview of the entire story, with short descriptions of each room. We settled on one room to start with, and this was the brief for the orange room:

“Some children walk with the Unicorn, and the Unicorn knocks on the octagon orange door. The Unicorn invites the children to stay in the orange room. The room is full of orange and tangerine trees, and the room smells of oranges. There is a bed with orange sheets and pillows. If you are feeling tired, you are welcome to rest and relax in the sweet-smelling orange room. You breathe in and out slowly.”

The client's brief

I provided a sketch for her before starting on the full image.

For the full image, I used different shades of orange to create a bedroom complete with children's toys, an orange tree and, at the client's request, a small yellow dinosaur on the bed.

With the first draft done, I sent it to the client, and I'm continuing to work through new ideas and corrections so it fully aligns with her vision.

Hedgehog Notes app icon

A cute hedgehog taking notes, for Hedgehog Fortress's Notes app

Hedgehog Fortress asked me to design the app icon for their privacy-first Notes app. The brief was short and sweet:

“A cute hedgehog taking notes.”

The client's brief

I worked through several iterations with the client, refining the character, his pose and the details until he was just right: a friendly hedgehog in a purple fedora, notepad in hand.

The client was very happy with the final design. Terry the hedgehog is now the Notes app icon, on phones and the Hedgehog Fortress website.
